sailors who smuggled them back to France. The seamen admired their
tough, durable stature. Popular in Europe the appear in many popular
paintings and artwork.
The French Bulldog first appeared in the United States in 1896 at
the Westminster Dog show. In 1897 the French Bulldog Club of America
was formed and the standard adopted then to define the breed remains
to this day essentially unchanged.
